OIL PAINTING MADE REAL SIMPLE with DOUG WHITFIELD

September 29 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Painting with only a few essential materials can save you money and help you paint better paintings than you ever imagined!

Sessions: Six, 2-hour sessions on Thursdays: September 29, October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3,

Time: 1:30 – 3:30 PM

Cost: Members $220, Non-members $250

Objective: Make oil painting less complicated for the beginner or intermediate, in a way that is easier to understand, easier to do and a mere fraction of the cost.  This uncluttered, practical manner of oil painting makes the experience more accessible and more enjoyable.

Course: Students will learn by doing (no lecture), so actual painting will begin the first session, working from a still life arrangement in the studio/classroom.  By dramatically simplifying materials students need to use, less time will be spent working with a traditional color palette, mediums, solvents and assorted theories and rules.

Materials: Students should bring the following to the first and subsequent sessions: table top easel (unless easels are available in the studio/classroom); disposable palette; package of orange bristle all-purpose artist brushes (Royal Langnickel-Gold Talon or Folkert-Gold Talon); small can of boiled linseed oil; odorless paint thinner in a closed jar; 4 gessoed panels or stretched canvases (at least 12″); 1.25oz. tubes of student grade oil paint: white, black or vandyke brown, yellow, red, blue; cotton rags or roll of paper towels.  Note that cadmium colors are pricey and not necessary at this time, and that most of these materials, including the brushes (about 50 cents each in ten packs), are available at Walmart.

Outcome for students after six sessions will be knowledge and practice using a greatly simplified process that when used in whole or part will get them great oil painting results on a budget.  Students will be able to add colors, mediums and other products if they desire as their basic skill and confidence levels increase.  Sometimes people keep it simple for the duration of their practice.  Students will have several small paintings to take home when the sessions are completed.
