Educational Philosophy -I believe that every individual has the inert ability to express their own ideas and the ideas of others in a musically artistic way, no matter the age and/or ability. The basis of my educational approach exists on two planes: that of the creative, emotional individual and that of the analytical, cerebral mind. Through the study of the traditional classical flute repertoire and other styles of music and art from cultures around the world, my students not only gain the instrumental facility to increase their musical expression and ability, but will also increase their intellectual and cultural knowledge. This creates a greater appreciation for the art form in which they are taking part and how it relates to the world around them. Unlike some traditional approaches, I choose not to use a set curriculum unless it is useful for a specific student. By doing this, the learning environment becomes a flexible and creative space. Together, the student with his or her own interests combined with my own experience and knowledge, creates a more holistic base on which to learn and progress. Learning through improvisation, listening, ear training and reading music the student will develop a solidified approach to learning, discipline and most importantly artistic expression in music and in life.
