PASTEL (all skill levels) – with Joan Balder Cook

This class is for artists wishing to improve their skills as well as for those new to the medium. The thoughts, techniques & palettes of other artists, current & past, will be discussed as well as color theory & composition. Participants may count on individualized attention & critiques to develop their own styles or to pursue a new direction.

For those new to pastel, soft & hard pastels will be used with a variety of papers. Pastel techniques will be demonstrated.

An award-winning artist, Joan has studied art @ SUNY Plattsburgh, St Michael’s College, Mohawk Valley Community College, Kirkland Art Center, Roeder Arts Center & Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts. She has been instructing pastel at MVCA since 2009.

2-Hour Workshop

Day/Time: Thursday, April 12 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM

2-Hour Workshop: $25 members / $30 non-members

Students ages 15 to Adult.

This workshop is designed to help you take advantage of the Smartphone Photography now at your fingertips – learn to take a great shot with your phone, along with some basic editing tips and tricks. Designed for the novice, this class will help you build fundamental skills, taking the mystery out of enjoying your phone camera.

Kids, parents, grandparents – bring your phone and your friends. Join Bob for a fun evening of Smartphone Photography.

Instructor: Bob Buck has had a life-time interest in photography. He frequently participates in local, regional, and national juried shows. He has shown at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, Arkell Museum and Art Gallery, Fulton Montgomery CC, and Albany Central Gallery Regional Shows. He participated in the MVCA Erie Canal Bicentennial and the Cherry Branch Gallery, Interior and Exterior Shows in Cherry Valley, Arts Factory Invitational Show in Canajoharie, and Cooperstown Art Assoc’n National Juried Show.

Discover an easy approach to the creation of exciting watercolors. Beginners and experienced artists continue to bring new elements of watercolor to share. Variations of color, shapes, and mood contribute to the class.

Time invested in watercolor exercises develops talent at all levels. To quote Pablo Picasso “It took me years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Come and join the group and see the world with fresh eyes.

Bring any supplies you may have.

Instructor: Painting over the last 20 years, Lynn has participated in many workshops, guilds, and art shows. Her work has been in many juried shows and has taken its place in many private and public collections. In teaching over the past five years at MVCA, Lynn continues to appreciate the accomplishments of her class members.

“MIXED MEDIA” with Frank Wilcox

Date/Time: Thursdays, 9 - 11:30 AM, 9/14 - 11/16
Location: 16 Jackson St (Lansing St entrance)
Price: $180 members / $200 non-members
walk-ins $25 per class

Students will work with a variety of media (acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal) at their own pace. Frank will give group demos, and each student will receive a great deal of individual attention. Students need to supply their own materials: oils, acrylics, drawing media, etc.

Instructor: Frank has been teaching art since 1960 to students of all levels of ability, including pre-school through adult and special needs students. He received his BS and MS in art at SUNY New Paltz. He has had solo shows at MVCA, View, Old Forge Library, Ilion Library, and Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

PAINTING WITH OILS with Kathryn Bartscht
Saturday Classes

Date/Time: Saturdays - Mar 10, Mar 24, Apr 7, Apr 21 Classes begin at 10 AM and conclude approximately 3 PM (when finished).

If you have ever thought you would like to try oil painting or even return to painting, then this is the class is for you! Learn the fundamentals to paint landscapes, still lifes, skies, oceans, mountains, trees, and so much more.

Kathryn uses the oil painting technique known as “wet-on-wet” or “alla prima.” This method is simply the practice of applying fresh oil paint into existing paint that has not completely dried. Complete paintings, using this technique, take a relatively short period of time, commonly in one sitting.

Students receive one-on- one attention and will learn skills such as canvas prep, glazing, working on toned canvas, basic brush types and strokes, and blending colors for desired shades, tints, and values.
