PASTEL (all skill levels) – with Joan Balder Cook
10 - WEEK CLASS

This class is for artists wishing to improve their skills as well as for those new to the medium. The thoughts, techniques & palettes of other artists, current & past, will be discussed as well as color theory & composition. Participants may count on individualized attention & critiques to develop their own styles or to pursue a new direction.

For those new to pastel, soft & hard pastels will be used with a variety of papers. Pastel techniques will be demonstrated.

An award-winning artist, Joan has studied art @ SUNY Plattsburgh, St Michael’s College, Mohawk Valley Community College, Kirkland Art Center, Roeder Arts Center & Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts. She has been instructing pastel at MVCA since 2009.

ART CLASS with Jim Parker
Wednesday evening classes are on-going.

Day/Time: Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Location: 16 Jackson St (Lansing St entrance)
Price for 6-Weeks: $60 members
Individual Class: $12.50 per week

Students ages 12 to Adult.
Special needs students are always welcome.

From Old English style watercolor painting to Japanese anime characters and manga comic drawing, Jim will work one-on-one with students in whatever style they desire. Class size is limited to 10 students to allow one-on-one instruction.

Instructor: Jim Parker is well-known locally for his historic folk art paintings, which have been commissioned by numerous villages, counties, chambers of commerce, historical societies and centennial committees. Parker concentrates on central New York State and the Adirondack Mountain area of New York State. His original paintings are all watercolors, done in an old English style of building each color.

WATERCOLOR: “Perspective Without Fear” With Lynn Rogers
8 - WEEK CLASS

Date/Time: Weds, 9:30 AM - Noon 9/20 -11/8
Location: South Side & 16 Jackson St (Lansing St entrance)
Price: 115 members / $135 non-members
Walk-ins: $25 per class

This class is designed for the beginner and intermediate artist. Emphasis will be on perspective and architecture of urban settings. Confidence will come with a pencil sketch and on to painting a composition.

Would you like to create a travel journal? Remember the connection you witnessed between people and places? Identify a local place? You can do it all, with the principles of watercolor.

Artists wishing to develop a subject of their own interest will be afforded instruction and guidance.

Come and join our friendly class. Bring any supplies you may have. A supply list will be available.

Instructor: Lynn Rogers is a watercolorist and pastel artist who has been recognized and participated in many juried shows. Her joy in fine art has provided continual interest in teaching. She has been rewarded by the successes of her students.

“REALISM WITH CHARCOAL” With John Famulare
10 - WEEK CLASS

Date/Time: Sundays, 2 - 4:30 PM
Location: South Side & 16 Jackson St (Lansing St entrance)
Price: $175 members / $190 non-members
walk-ins $20 per class

Students will work with a variety of charcoals. Some drawing experience would be helpful but is not required. John will give short demos emphasizing a particular principle, followed by a great deal of individual attention. Students need to supply their own materials. A materials list is available through the Arts Center.

Instructor: Famulare is a graduate of Little Falls High School, and Union College in Schenectady with a BA in Fine Arts.

“MIXED MEDIA” with Frank Wilcox
10 - WEEK CLASS

Date/Time: Thursdays, 9 - 11:30 AM, 9/14 - 11/16
Location: South Side & 16 Jackson St (Lansing St entrance)
Price: $180 members / $200 non-members
walk-ins $25 per class

Students will work with a variety of media (acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal) at their own pace. Frank will give group demos, and each student will receive a great deal of individual attention. Students need to supply their own materials: oils, acrylics, drawing media, etc.

Instructor: Frank has been teaching art since 1960 to students of all levels of ability, including pre-school through adult and special needs students. He received his BS and MS in art at SUNY New Paltz. He has had solo shows at MVCA, View, Old Forge Library, Ilion Library, and Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

“Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain” With Donnalyn Shuster

Have you ever been frustrated in the past learning how to draw? Cannot seem to get things the ‘way you see them’? This 6 class introductory course will allow you to discover untapped potential and give you the confidence to tackle more complicated subjects!

Featuring the tips and techniques in Betty Edward’s split brain theory, you will learn how to harness your creative side, through observational and visualization skills. The multiple-session course begins with observational skill sets, visualization of positive and negative space, and progresses into value and shading of common forms. Your confidence as an artist will grow in just six weeks!

Instructor: Donnalyn Shuster is a graduate of SUNY Potsdam. She is a permanently certified NYS educator who recently retired from Frankfort- Schuyler Central School after 35 years as an art educator. She has exhibited work regionally at the MVCA, Arkell Museum, and the St. Lawrence County Arts Council in Potsdam.
