Current research shows that musical instruction develops responsibility, mental discipline, and self-esteem. We at MVCA also strive to make it enjoyable while fostering a lifelong appreciation of music. Ms. Dumka specializes in various saxophone instruments. For the last 8+ years, she has been the Arts in Education Coordinator for Herkimer Co. BOCES. She is also the President of CNY Arts Board of Directors. She has degrees from several prestigious institutions, including SUNY Potsdam/Crane Music, Northwestern, and SUNY Cortland.

Carol is offering private lessons to interested students. Class times would be scheduled on a one-on-one basis with care taken so as not to interfere with school classes and activities. For more information, please contact MVCA at 315-823-0808 to arrange a discussion with Ms. Dumka.

MVCA is excited to welcome string music education!

This exciting new program is already taking wing. Ms. Laura Smith is currently teaching private violin, viola and cello lessons for students of all levels and ages through MVCA.

Pre-registration is required, and beginners will work with Laura to arrange instrument sizing and rentals. Interested students should pre-register NOW for classes which begin May 15.

We are excited to offer opportunities for all students to have FUN and broaden their musical studies by participating in ensemble work during the summer. A Youth Ensemble will begin on June 5 that will meet on Wednesday nights, 7-8:30 for intermediate to advanced students. The venue for this group will be announced soon. Anyone that already takes instrument lessons, and wants to participate in this group is welcome, including woodwinds. Our ultimate goal is to have a full Youth Symphony Orchestra in Little Falls.

We encourage all beginners to participate in our rhythm and jam group in addition to taking private lessons. Performing with peers helps students with listening skills and rhythmic development. They have the fun of collaborating with others to create beautiful music. Students learn the importance of orchestration and tone balance.

All students and ensembles will have the opportunity to perform at the Arts Center or another appropriately sized venue in the Mohawk Valley.

We are supporting students and ensembles of all levels. Don’t be shy! Sign up today! If you already play, consider joining us for the ensemble work this summer. There are so many opportunities to enjoy the lifetime skills of enjoying and playing stringed instruments.

We also have arranged simple programs to rent or purchase instruments.

We want to do everything we can to support our students.

MVCA is proud to welcome Ms. Laura Smith of the Mohawk Valley Strings to lead this program.

A graduate of the Julliard School and Mannes College of Music, Ms. Smith’s background in string music education includes 15 years of coaching and teaching with the InterSchool Orchestras of New York (NYC), and as a faculty member of the Kinhaven Music School and Summertrios. Laura is currently on the music faculty at the Allen-Stevenson School in NYC, where she has taught for the past 17 years. She frequently gives string master classes, and she was asked to adjudicate for the NYSSMA Festival in Manhattan. She performs regularly with Symphoria (formerly the Syracuse Symphony) and Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown. Ms. Smith has a Master’s degree in Opera/Music-Theater and is a certified Yoga Therapy and Chair Yoga teacher. Laura’s passion for teaching arises from a belief that playing a musical instrument builds confidence, sensitivity, and communication skills.
